Words of Wisdom
Sincerely Seek out Selenium
Sherry Taylor - 11/22/2025
I want to bring out another trace mineral today that is showing up in numerous studies. Selenium is getting time in the spotlight and has been for years, and for good reason.
Selenium is very important for antioxidant properties. You may know that oxidation is what ages people, so we want to keep our anti- oxidation support strong. So, this mineral helps fight environmental toxins, and endo-toxins.
Selenium is essential for a good immune system and helps regulate inflammation.
Selenium helps regulate metabolism and growth; very important for the thyroid.
Selenium studies show that it helps fight cancer and other chronic diseases.
Selenium protects brain health and reproductive health.
Those are some of the good things - critical things - that Selenium does in the body. Now let's see what it looks like when we don't have enough of it.
- Lowered immunity
- Skin or nail spots
- Hair loss
- Hair or skin discoloration
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Memory issues
- Fertility issues
- Thyroid issues
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- High Blood pressure
- History of cancer
- Premature aging
- Cataracts
- Muscle weakness
None of those sound like anything we want to deal with! While I do recommend a good mineral supplement, we can always choose good foods to give us an extra boost in vitamins and minerals. Here is a list of foods that give us selenium:
- Organ meats
- Seafood
- Poultry
- Pork
- Brazil nuts
- Sunflower seeds
- Cashews
- Beans/legumes
- Oats
- Cheese
- Mushrooms
- Tofu
- Walnuts
- Whole grains
- Eggs
When I look at this list, I think of snacks. One thing that could help so many people with their weight, health, and mineral sufficiency, is to eat healthier snacks. Brazil nuts are actually the number one thing that people think of when they think of selenium. Nuts and seeds are a wonderful snack. The crunch is good. The saltiness is good. The fat is good. I mean, what's not to love? Nuts as a snack way surpass things like sugary snacks and simple carbs.
How about a hardboiled egg or cheese for a snack?
Actually, kids are starting back to school this week. I highly recommend giving them healthy snacks instead of sugar after school.
Okay. That was a little rabbit trail, but I do want to stress the importance of getting enough selenium in our diet. We will be benefitted in so many ways. The body is meant to be strong and to heal itself. Let's give it what it needs to do its job.
Until next time...
Enjoy God's providence!
