Chromium is Critical

Chromium boosts metabolism.
Have you ever heard of Chromium? Well, you might remember it from science classes in school. I doubt very many of you think about it as an important mineral that you need. Not many people look at the ingredients list on their vitamins and minerals bottle to see if it has Chromium.
Chromium is a trace mineral, meaning we need it in small amounts. It is an essential mineral, though. It is necessary for the body's metabolism - breaking down carbs and fats. It plays a major part in how the body uses insulin. This in turn is important for brain function as well as other processes in the body.
Chromium is associated with helping with PCOS and type 2 diabetes. Chromium helps lower blood sugar. You can see that having a sufficient amount of this mineral can help fight off diseases.
Let me do another list for you. This shows symptoms associated with low Chromium.
- Decreased energy
- Increased anxiety
- Mood swings
- Cold hands
- High LDL or low HDL cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Excessive or cold sweating
- Irritability
- Require frequent meals, or shaky after a few hours without a meal
- Excessive sleep
- Drowsy in the daytime
- Excessive thirst
- Sugar addiction
- Increased blood sugar
- Insulin resistance
- Weight gain
- Numbness in hands and feet
- Confusion
- Hair loss
... among other things.
We can get Chromium from good whole foods, as well as supplements if needed. It's best to get a nutritional assessment to find out what nutrients you are low in. If several things on that list apply to you, then I would highly recommend an assessment.
Here are a few things that can boost our Chromium levels:
- Whole grains
- Green beans
- Broccoli
- Nuts/Brazil nuts
- Egg yolks
- Brewer's yeast
- Potatoes with skins
- Carrots
- Oysters
- Beef/Meats/liver
- Tomato juice
- Apple
- Bananas
- Grapes
- English muffin (!)
- Mussels
- Some cheeses
Like I said earlier, eating plain ol' real food is so beneficial for keeping us healthy. Indeed, healthy food makes a healthy body. Imagine that!
Above, when I mentioned the science classes - the chromium that science is more interested in is Chromium 6. It is also appealing to the people who like a lot of chrome on their vehicles. That can be toxic to our bodies.
When it comes to health, we are interested in chromium 3 which is in foods and in our soil. For your safety, don't get them mixed up.
I hope you have been able to see the importance of getting enough vitamins and minerals in the foods we eat. I hope to do just a couple more posts on minerals before I move on to another subject.
Until next time...
Enjoy God's providence!
